Vampire Diaries: Not your average flashback episode

VAMPIRE DIARIES: 2.09 “Katerina”

Intrigue. I loved this episode. I’m surprised because the last flashback episode bored me, but seeing how Katerina became Katherine, the scary vamp, was very fun. Plus, knowing that there are scarier vamps out there than her? Well, that’s just icing on the cake.

Here’s my only problem with this episode: I don’t know where to start in discussing it. Not a terrible problem to have, but a problem nonetheless.

So I’ll start with Bonnie. I’m going to ignore the gross ick-factor about how she had a pseudo-date with Jeremy (I wonder if she realized it was a date?). Well, clearly it didn’t mean too much to her because while she did hang with him when he arrived, she ditched him a little later. I did feel a little bad for Jeremy at that point, even this definitely isn’t the couple I want together.

As for the new guy in town, we obviously know that we shouldn’t trust the father, after seeing the final scene. It’s funny. When the son told Bonnie that he was a warlock, not a witch, I got up in arms. Having read both The Vampire Diaries and The Secret Circle, another book series  by L.J. Smith that involves witches, I knew that Smith felt that men witches were still called witches. In fact, there’s a line in The Secret Circle that says a warlock is a deceiver, a traitor. You can’t interchange the names!

Well, it looks like they just might be what Smith wrote. The father certainly has different goals, and it wouldn’t surprise me if the son were in on it. I guess we’ll have to see.

In other news, the only entertaining aspect of Damon’s storyline this episode was that awesome glass shattering scene. Seriously, that was fantastic. And it also showed us how, the older you are, the easier you heal. Rose was scalded and gross and became flawless in mere seconds.

I must say, I really did like Slater, and I was sad to see him go. But the fact that an Original can compel a vampire, well, that’s cool. I can’t wait to see what problems that brings.

Meanwhile, we have Elena’s discovery that it wasn’t Stefan and Damon that is bringing the gray cloud over the land. It’s the fact that she was an ancestor of Katerina’s illegitimate daughter. She’s the doppelganger–just as Katherine herself was at one time–and she’s going to have to deal with that. I don’t know how, and I’m not sure anyone else does either. If any of you viewers have a guess, please share it.

As I mentioned, I was enthralled with Katherine’s background: how she was turned, the fact that the Originals killed her family and she was so upset about it. It really gave a depth to the character, which I appreciated.

Darn you, Vampire Diaries, always making me feel for people I don’t like. Well, that just must mean you are a well-written show.

  1. It was really interesting to learn how Katherine became a vampire! I enjoyed these flashbacks a lot. If anything, it showed that she did have real feelings at some point in her life!

I’m hoping that these new warlocks/witches (whatever they should be called!) create a nice big roadblock for the Jeremy/Bonnie relationship because I am not a fan. I think the son may be okay, but the father obviously isn’t. I was sad when Slater died as well! I liked him.

And what will Elena do now? I don’t think she’ll turn into a vampire just yet. I believe that will happen eventually…like after a few more seasons, but now is too soon. I can see her being all noble and turning herself into the originals just so the others won’t get hurt. But then again, they still need a werewolf and witch too.
