RAISING THE BAR: 2.05 “Is There a Doctor in the House?”
This episode was just sad for me. I know the kid with the mental disability was edging on slightly humorous or over the top, but he was definitely tugging at the heartstrings for me. It’s almost sadder to know that people were probably chuckling at him. I don’t know what made it slightly over the top, but I could see that it was. But there was something about his hard exterior breaking down to show a vulnerable side within that really got to me.
But he won me over, especially as he talked about his Peter Pan lamp. Pete’s his man. And the way he discussed his decision with the lamp before taking the plea. While the light show was a little cheesy, it was definitely a touching moment. I’m glad he’ll be in good hands.
And you know, I’m glad they didn’t show the lamp. I know it’s a little detail, but it makes a big difference. It helps with the illusion and his entire identity.
And then there was, of course, Suzette, which was even sadder. A needless death because of negligence. I can see, to a degree, why cops might have not given her the time of day. It’s true that there are addicts that are fighting the pains of withdrawal and that every person is making excuses to get out of jail.
BUT…
The hot-potato game that was Suzette’s final hours really were the blame. If she had gone to central booking, those hours of pain would have been noticed and by all accounts, taken care of. She really would have been saved.
Porter’s actions were really to blame. He wanted to get back at Jerry for his own mistake. Sure, Jerry might need to watch his cocky attitude, but it was still uncalled for. Oh, and thinking about her brother… How he was so secure and ok when he came to the hospital, ready to handle everything himself perfectly fine. And then to find out about that…
The entire episode was just really tough. Even if her brother gets to have a civil lawsuit, Jerry is right. It’s a cold comfort.
Throughout all this, I almost forgot Charlie’s non-date (man, if I could hear Trudy talk about non-dates more, I think I’d be entertained for hours–that was great). What do you think of that? I definitely think that it could switch things up a bit if he became the assistant for another judge. But you know, I miss Trudy. We really haven’t seen much of her this year, and I think she’s great. I like the new judge (especially John Michael Higgins), but there’s something about the Trudy/Charlie camaraderie that is really appealing.
Oh, and seeing Trudy in his courtroom? Awesome. I want to see more of that strength in the rest of the season. Less tame. More attitude.
Ok, so I suggested on my Twitter that there might be a quiz on tonight’s episode. I was going to make it hard, but we’ll make it easy this time. You don’t win anything except my respect and brag rights, but it’ll be fun anyway. Here goes:
When Bobbie shows Jerry her purse, what does he say probably cut it? Not who, but what?
Enjoy that. Answers can go in comments. Enjoy the brag rights if you get them!
