Thursday Open Thread: Comic Book Spinoffs

In Angel, Battlestar Galactica, Buffy, Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, Heroes, Merchandise, The Muppet Show, Thursday Open Thread, open thread on June 11, 2009 at 10:52 am

Remember when comic books were the geeky thing? Now, it seems like they’re everywhere. Perhaps, I’ve just moved over to the geeky side, but in some ways, I’m embracing it. What about you?

Do you read comic book spinoffs or adaptations of your favorite shows?

What’s funny is that you’d think it was just the sci-fi genre that really gets the fans, but it’s expanding. Sure, there’s Heroes and Battlestar Galactica. But most recently, there’s been The Muppet Show! Plus, add in the comics that extend a show past cancellation–Angel and Buffy are the obvious picks–or even the web comics that go hand-in-hand with things like Dr. Horrible (prequels all over the place), and you’ve got yourself a lot to catch up on.

So what do you do? Do you read them? And how? Do you pick one up as a tester, or do you wait for the trade paperback and make a $12.95 commitment?

Tell us in comments.

  1. I actually haven’t really read many TV-To-Comic adaptations. I did read one Battlestar Galactica comic and it was pretty good, but nothing other than that.

That being said, I would probably go into a coma of joy if someone decided to finish the Carnivale story in comic book form. Frankly, I think that’s the perfect medium to finish it up. There were some rumors going on about it a while ago. Some google searching, however, revealed that the creator has been writing Iron Man comics, but doesn’t want to do a Carnivale one. Come on, we have enough Iron Man out there!

  2. I’ve read some of the Buffy ones and the Angel ones. I really like Angel (probably because they really did leave the story open-ended). Buffy’s good, but not as good as Angel. But then again, I was in some Dollhouse chats and people HATE the Buffy and Angel comics, so I guess it’s not everyone. Firefly also had some comics.

That being said, the Buffy comics that were written DURING the show are terrible. I’ve got two omnibus volumes, and they’re not that great. Maybe a decent one-off or two, but as a group, pretty blah (which is unfortunate, since they have some stand-out authors sometimes).

I do wonder, though, whether I read some of these because I’m dedicated to the shows. I don’t know if I’d pick them up otherwise.
